Curriculum Statement
The children at J.A. Cuddy Child Care Centre Inc. are celebrated as unique individuals who deserve a variety of opportunities to grow and develop to their fullest potential.  We believe that children learn best through play, and we place great emphasis on a child-centred curriculum.  Play is unlimited, open-ended, and spontaneous, stimulating imagination and expanding intelligence.  Play has no extrinsic goals, and is often a testing ground for language and reasoning.  Children’s play is based on their interests and ideas, and is often self-directed.  Children are active learners who are curious about the world around them.  As educators, we feel that it is important to offer a child-based curriculum that supports and extends children’s play.
Our role is to enhance existing play situations by providing materials and opportunities for learning and growth.  The curriculum at J.A. Cuddy Child Care Centre Inc. is based on goals for children’s social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development while understanding each individual child’s needs, abilities, and interests.  The main components contributing to our curriculum are the interactions and relationships between children and staff, the surrounding environment, and the implementation of planned and spontaneous experiences.
Direct interactions that are both positive and respectful allow for genuine relationships to develop between the children and their educators.  This creates an atmosphere in which children feel accepted for their individuality.  When strong relationships are created, educators can develop a curriculum that best suits the children’s needs.  Close observation of the children at play allows for staff to develop ideas about the children’s interests, skills, and abilities.  Educators closely consider what the children are doing, what the children are saying, what they are learning, and what they are curious about.  Asking open-ended questions that build vocabulary, extend knowledge, or build creative thinking are important during interactions.  Questions like, “What do you think?” or, “What will happen next,” allow for the children to make decisions and evaluate situations.  It is then important for the educator to consider what they children need, what can be provided, and in what way.  Once observations have been made, educators share the information with colleagues, parents, and the children through verbal interactions, visible documentation, like bulletin boards or  photo displays, and curriculum webbing.
The environment plays a key role in curriculum planning at J.A. Cuddy Child Care Inc.  Children need environments that support both interaction and exploration.  Indoor and outdoor environments that provide adequate space, materials, and time to play enrich and challenge children in a variety of ways.  Providing an environment that fosters play is one of the most crucial components of programming.  Educators carefully consider room arrangement by creating specific activity centres that encourage interaction and learning, while ensuring that toys and materials are accessible and developmentally appropriate.
After close observations and environmental assessments, ECEs develop and implement planned experiences that support the children’s learning.  Simple provocations are used as a means of collecting more information about the kinds of activities that spark the children’s interests and stimulate learning.  Educators then provide experiences based on the children’s interests that satisfy all domains of development.  Music, science, math, literacy, art, and dramatic play experiences can all influence and enhance children’s learning.  At J.A. Cuddy Child Care, we strive to provide the children with a variety of learning opportunities through planned and spontaneous experiences.  As children’s interests change, so does the curriculum.

Families can participate in the development and implementation of our curriculum.  We welcome any ideas, information, or feedback that will better our programming.  We are committed to providing quality early learning and care for the children and families of our centre by offering a child-based curriculum that suits each child’s needs.
